My dad was at Fort Ord with the 864th Ordnance HAM unit, and I'm so pleased to see that you are doing this! Dad took a lot of photos and I have been wondering what to do about them -- would you like to see them? I would like to make a donation when I get a chance, too, but I would be glad to hear from you at wittnebert07882@yahoo.com if you get a chance. Best regards, Mary Alice

My dad Billy Frank Wilshire was stationed at Ft.Ord in 1957. I was born there at the base Dec.6 1957.My father always told me I was born free, because there was no medical charges for the inlisted. But my mother said it was not free, they had to pay for the food she ate. It was $9.15, thats still pretty cheap. My dad passed away in 2002, but always had good stories to tell about living there. He was in the 5th Infantry,Company B, Eleventh Infantry Regiment.

Planning to visit Monterey soon and just found your web site. I did basic, LPC, and AIT (commo)in 69' then off to Nam. My fondest memory was watching them land on the moon in the rec. room with all the guys, and going to the NCO club to buy a case of "Bown Derby" to drink in the old barracks on the weekend when we didn't have money to go into town or go home, I lived in East LA then. thanks guys.

Thanks for the memories. I was in Fort Ord in 1956 (May~June) for basic training. I was 18 at the time and am 66 years old now. I remember there was a group of us standing up on the hill looking down on the soldiers club and listening to Little Richard perform. I was so excited when I found the picture of the club. We had to stand on the hill and listen because we didn't have the money to get into the club. I also enjoyed the picture of the old service club building. The bulletin board was still there when I was there in 1956. I think we were the first ones to live in the new barracks. They were painted green then. Company "F" was my company. It was the third building on the left side of the picture of the new barracks. While I was there they were making a movie in the barracks, Company "D," below us. The title was The Girl I Left Behind with Natalie Wood. I left Fort Ord for Germany where I was in TDY. I travel all over Germany with a singing group, The Rockers. After that I was stationed in Fort Benning, Ga. Again, thanks so much for the memories. Marvin Van Bryant

Hi, my uncle Jon Marron Just passed away last week. I found letters written to him while he was stationed in Fort Ord, company A, 10 battle group, 3rd brigade. They were addressed to "private Jon Marron, dated between 3/1962 thru 8/1962. I never knew about this part of his life. Can anyone shed any light on what it was like for him there? sincerely, his niece, Julie Ann.

I'm glad it's still there and someone cares, my Dad was stationed there. I am looking for anything or anyone who can help me. His name was Staff Sgt. Ernest G. DuMonte. His records were destroyed in the 1973 fire. There are existing records, but a sibling took all records when he passed in 2000 and has recently chose to disappear. I do have some info, return addresses on the letters he wrote home during the war, a picture of him in uniform with a round star patch on the left sleeve. I'm hoping that these things can help to tell what co., unit, regiment, and so on that he was in, in the pacific theater. If I can get that the VA will be able to reconstruct records. Thank you for what your'e doing!

My dad recently passed away. He was a Korean War vet and was one of the thousands of "Gravel Agitators" who received their training at Fort Ord. I have some of his yearbooks, but some of them were damaged over the years and I was wondering if there was someplace where I could get replacements. Does the Army keep back issues or old yearbooks stored away somewhere? Thanks.

Hey Chet, glad to see you found this web site on Fort Ord. I really enjoy reading all the messages here. Maybe more former 8th EVAC/CSH members will write in. I can not find out what ever happened to the 8th EVAC hospital after Fort Ord closed down. Does anyone know?

Visited Ord again the weekend of July 31. I wanted to revisit since last summer's trip because my wife in her usual efficient manner inadvertently threw out some mementos I had collected and brought home. (As I indicated in my post of October '03, I took BCT on the hill in May of '70). The place is inexorably transforming itself into a college campus so if you can find the time and have the inclination I would get out there, preferably before school starts and on the weekend ? workers are at a minimum. Indeed I have been told that my barracks on the hill are to be razed within a year from now. My wife says my reason for returning is to recapture my youth. I'll accept her admonition to a certain extent, but my experience leading up to the draft and the subsequent BCT at Ord had a significant effect on me ? more so than college. How I would love to have a reunion with those guys that I went through BCT with. Walking by the old WWII barracks to me was a solemn process. I simply thought of all the earnest, important young men that went through there - men that did the heavy lifting, quietly yet remarkably. As it turned out, there was one where the door was open and no trash inside. As a matter of fact the interior was in splendid shape. How it reminded me of my initiation into the Army and of my fellow draftees that took that bus ride up to the fort and of that trepidacious first night. It brought a smile to my face. I have pictures of it and others. If you want to see them, send me an email subject: "Ord pictures" (please, otherwise I'll assume spam) and I will send them to you. Again, thanks to Mr. Swann for this site. Send him a donation.

I was born on base, according to my birth certificate, on 9-11-1968. I believe my birth parents were 18 and 19 & not married. I don't know if it was Hayes Hospital or not. If anyone recalls any info along these lines please contact me. Attending physician on certificate is Frederick W. Bald M.D.

HELP!! Fort Ord Military Police Institute 1972 I'm looking for anyone who can help me convince Jaimie A Brehler / jabrehler@msn.com that in fact there was a Fort Ord Military Police Institute where I took M.P.training starting June 27 1972. The shortage of Military Policeman on that post was the main reason for starting this institute. The OIC was Cpt Gerald B Senneff and the instructors were ssg Miller ssg Holzhauer sgt Jones. Heres what Jaimie A Brehler claims, "I was an Active Duty MP for over 12 years. A MP school has never ever been at Ft. Ord Ca. as Roger Swedlund claims since the US Army has had MP's. Check out the MP School website and MP Corps History listed on it for yourself." He is DEAD wrong! I was sent there from Hunter Liggett . Anyone help me convince MR.JAIMIE A. BREHLER that it was for real and that I am not a liar! Thank you, Roger Swedlund AKA Hondo hondovnvmcusa@aol.com Jaimie A Brehler / jabrehler@msn.com

This message is for Charles Swann. As I mentioned to you in an email sometime ago, I have been in contact with the President of California State University Monterey Bay regarding a tour of Fort Ord by former Ord veterans. He fully supports the idea and I would be interested in anyone who might be intersted in helping. Since you have access to all those who have visited your site, I was wondering if you would have an interest in participating with this venture. Please advise, thanks, Rudy Estrada.

It was definitly something to stumble across this website dedicated to Fort Ord. My dad was stationed there from 86 until 91. It sure was a shame to hear about them closing it down. I have alot of old childhood memories from Fort Ord. It was a great place to grow up. I'm looking for any of my old friends from there.
